Lustrous Gem 1837 Capped Bust Dime Condition Census for the Variety 1837 Capped Bust Dime. JR-3. Rarity-2. MS-65 (PCGS). A faint dusting of golden patina accents the otherwise brilliant complexion of this beautiful Gem. The surfaces show uniformly satin luster, remaining smooth and undisturbed throughout the fields and across the high points. Sharply struck and attractive, a die crack through the digit 7 in the date and a low F in OF on the reverse make for easy attribution of this variety. The year 1837 is a transitional one in the dime series, with the Philadelphia Mint striking 359,500 examples of the Capped Bust type followed by 682,500 examples of the new Liberty Seated design. The 1837 has the lowest mintage among Capped Bust issues of the Modified Design type (1828 to 1837), and Mint State survivors are particularly scarce. Numismatic researchers have identified four distinct die marriages of the 1837 Capped Bust dime, JR-3 of unremarkable rarity in most grades but incredibly elusive at and near the Gem Mint State level. The present example is firmly in the Condition Census for the variety, which is topped by a quartet of MS-66 examples that includes the Newman and Joseph C. Thomas specimens. This piece was last offered at public auction more than 15 years ago certified MS-66 by NGC, and it is certainly at the uppermost reaches of the grade level currently assigned by PCGS.
