THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION The 1851 gold dollar is a common date, as the mintage of more than 3.3 million would suggest. However, they are NOT common in GEM or higher grades. Shimmering cartwheels roll steadily over the satiny smooth surfaces on both sides of this sharply rendered GEM. Premium technical quality as well as above average for the grade eye appeal give this tiny jewel huge allure. PCGS 31, NGC 20, CAC 11. The most recent PCGS/CAC example sold back in our October 2017 Regency Auction for $6,169; prior to that, we sold one in May 2017 for $5,875.
