- 1895 Morgan Silver Dollar. Proof-45 (PCGS). In terms of total number of coins known to exist, the 1895-P is the rarest date in the entire Morgan Dollar series of 1878-1921. The only examples extant are survivors of the year's 880-piece proof delivery, business strikes either having never been struck or, less likely, having all been destroyed in the Mint. Given the extreme popularity of the Morgan Dollar among today's collectors, an 880-piece mintage is hardly sufficient to meet current market demand for individual issues in this series, thus explaining the strong price that even impaired proof 1895s fetch whenever they appear at auction.<br /> A relatively short stint in circulation was not sufficient to efface the proof qualities of this coin. The devices retain overall sharp detail and the fields continue to shimmer with a reflective finish as they rotate under a light. Warm, even, golden-gray patina dominates the outward appearance at most angles, and it does help to conceal a smattering of small and moderate-size contact marks. A coin that is sure to find many adherents among bidders.
