- 1851-D Gold Dollar. Winter 3-D. MS-63 (NGC). Lustrous medium yellow gold with soft blushes of rose toning on both sides. A deep impression from slightly misaligned dies resulting in areas of very high, full rims. The original planchet had a tiny clip, and the thinness at the rim that gives it away may be easily seen at about 11:30 on the reverse. Slight softness at the central hair curls, while the wreath is nicely executed. Fewer than 10,000 coins were minted and Doug Winter ranks it only 11th of the 13 dates for overall rarity. Even higher grade examples are not that tough, though it is worth mentioning that NGC has graded just six pieces finer than this.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
What an interesting coin this is, with distinctive die characteristics as well. A nice acquisition for a specialized Dahlonega Mint gold collection.
