- FROM THE BIG CYPRESS COLLECTION The 1801 half dime is a lower mintage issue with only 27,760 reported struck. This high grade AU piece is among the ten HIGHEST graded at PCGS with just five known in Mint State grades. The fact that the Pogue Collection, which was full of CHOICE and GEM Mint State early half dimes, contained an AU58 as well. That speaks volumes to the RARITY of this date in high grade! The present LM-2, which is a Rarity-4 die pair, has a nearly full mint luster and the surfaces are rich and brilliant with minimal toning of any kind. Bluntly struck from a clashed state of the dies, the central reverse and areas of the peripheries on both sides show a lack of definition, while the bust and eagle's wings show bold detail. Light friction lines are all that keep this coin from a technical Mint State grade, and a strong glass reveals a few very minor light scuffs and a hairsbreadth scratch or two, but these are very minor and cannot be seen without the aid of a glass. The luster is very bold and accents the shimmering silver surfaces on both sides, imparting a visual effect of a higher grade coin! PCGS 5, NGC 1. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $18,000. There are not many auction records, the most recent was in September 2019. The market today is much different than it was over two years ago, and this coin will certainly bring more. Only five coins are graded Mint State at PCGS, none have sold since 2014! About as fine an example anyone could ever realistically hope to own, and worthy of a great cabinet of early silver issues! Good luck. Cert. Number 39536096 PCGS # 4267
