- 1889 Liberty Head Eagle. JD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-6+. Proof-60 (PCGS).
An exceedingly rare offering of a Proof 1880s gold coin, this Liberty Head ten retains full reflectivity in the fields. The design elements are set apart with a softly frosted texture, and they also sport razor sharp striking detail to even the most intricate features. Vivid deep gold color brightens to more of a golden-yellow hue under a light.
The Mint produced just 45 Proof eagles in 1889 for distribution as part of the year's Proof sets. Typical of the era, the paucity of survivors (John W. Dannreuther, 2018, states 14 to 18 in all grades) suggests that most specimens failed to sell to collectors. While it is often assumed that undistributed Proofs were destroyed through melting, some may have been distributed into commercial channels. The unusually large number of moderately marked, if not also slightly impaired Proofs that have come to light through our sale of the Fairmont Collection are strongly suggestive of such distribution. Indeed, this Proof 1889 eagle has the appearance of a coin that spent many years in a bag alongside other pieces. It remains unmistakable as a Proof, nonetheless, and is still a visually appealing specimen with undeniable rarity. An exciting offering for the advanced collector Liberty Head gold coinage.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set.
