- Whitman-9150, Breen-1064. Listed in the Red Book, the Castorland medal or jeton was linked to a French settlement in upstate New York. These were a proposed coinage for the settlement. Originals were struck in silver and copper in very limited numbers and are very rare today. Later, restrikes were produced for collectors at the Paris mint. This is a Paris Mint Restrike, as evidenced by the marking on the edge at 6:00, including the word ARGENT for silver. The obverse shows a crowned bust of the goddess Cybele with the name of the colony around. The reverse shows an allegorical scene of a goddess holding a cornucopia and tapping a maple tree. A beaver is below (castor is French for Beaver). The present piece is the FINEST graded by PCGS and is the plate for PCGS CoinFacts. Possessing watery, almost fully PL reflective fields on both sides, it is totally original and beautifully toned. Exceptional antique teal, rose, and soft apricot-gold hues accentuate the high end quality surfaces and sharply struck devices. A tiny hidden mark can be found with a strong glass, noted for accuracy, but the eye appeal is truly amazing. PCGS 1, NGC 0. Unlisted in the PCGS Price Guide in this lofty state of preservation, the last PCGS MS65 sold in February 2017 for $1,763. This coin's eye appeal is far superior to that piece and should break that record auction price when the hammer falls. What a great piece for the collector of colonial pieces. Cert.
