FROM THE DR. STEPHEN DAVIDSON COLLECTION What a bit of serendipity it has been for Legend Rare Coin Auctions in 2021 to be able to offer two examples of this VERY RARE early Seated Liberty Proof. The estimated mintage is 15 and there are perhaps 10-15 known in all grades (the total certified population data no doubt includes duplicate submissions). Flashy, brilliant, watery-reflective fields sparkle from below a splendid melange of rich original toning. Sky blue, tangerine-gold, crimson-rose, and soft violet hues are dusted in a lovely, dappled pattern on both sides. Care was clearly taken in the preparation, as every detail is sharply impressed. There are no serious marks or ticks of any kind, and in our opinion, this CHOICE PROOF is conservatively graded, we would not flinch if this coin was housed in a higher grade holder (no guarantees). The eye appeal is excellent! Ex Superior's sale of the Thomas Chalkley Collection, January 1990, lot 3574; Heritage's sale of the Silbermunzen Collection, May 2008, lot 720; Heritage's FUN Auction, January 2014, lot 5261; our consignor. Only 15 Proofs were estimated to have been struck. PCGS 3, NGC 2, CAC 3. This coin sold for $23,500 nearly eight years ago. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $21,500. While PCGS reports half a dozen examples graded higher, we have no doubt there are some duplicate submissions reported. Nothing finer has sold since 2018 when a PR65 sold for over $50,000. A real RARITY that is undervalued in this market. We think there is real long term potential on these somewhat overlooked rarities; think about it this way, this coin is RARER than many classic rarities that routinely sell for six and seven-figures, and can be had for a tiny fraction of the price!
