- Ex Newman-Simpson, as noted on the insert. One of the GREATEST RARITIES that straddles two specialties in American Numismatics: Classic Commemoratives and Patterns. This SUPERB GEM is one of just three known and boasts an incredible pedigree! Both obverse and reverse were struck from the normal dies, in copper, at the Philadelphia mint, prior to the San Francisco mintmark being punched into the obverse die. Considered to be Rarity-8 in the 10th edition of the Judd Pattern Reference, with just 3 or so known. These incredibly rare strikes without the mintmark were thought to have been produced clandestinely as fantasies (as they are known in copper, silver, and gold). Walter Breen reported a quote from Farran Zerbe stating the coins "may have been struck as trial pieces at the Philadelphia Mint by the instructions of the Secretary of the Treasury (W.G. McAdoo), who was a coin collector." Only three specimens of Judd-1792/1962 are confirmed today. The well-preserved surfaces are brightly lustrous, rather than reflective. Pleasing bronzed red/brown patination, retains most of its original red color, mixed with attractive shades of chestnut-brown and bluem, with some old minor flecks noted under close inspection. Well struck and extremely eye appealing. Ex Eric P. Newman Collection, Heritage, April 2013, lot 4048 (as NGC PR66+* RB CAC); Bob R. Simpson Collection; Heritage, January 2022, lot 3867. PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. This coin realized nearly $200,000 when it sold in the Newman sale and $168,000 in its only other auction appearance. The NGC PR66 RB that sold in July 2015 is presumably the PCGS PR67 RB (which has way less Red than this SUPERB GEM). This is an AMAZING example that will immediately vault the collector to another level! This is a very rare and historic example that belongs either in the greatest of commemorative or pattern collections. Good luck. Cert. Number 44160975 PCGS # 12179
