- Undated (1795) Washington North Wales Halfpenny. Baker-35, W-11190. Four Stars (a.k.a. Two Stars at Each Side of Harp). EF-45 (PCGS). Struck in a brassy copper alloy, as typical of the variety, with the often seen dark brown surfaces on both sides. The striking detail is also crude, as usual for the type, with the definition uneven and quite blunt in isolated areas in and around the centers. Overall light wear is significant for a North Wales Halfpenny, however, as are generally smooth, tight, problem free surfaces that reveal no significant blemishes apart from a few wispy abrasions.
Struck in England during the 1790s, and part of the British "evasion halfpence" series, the North Wales halfpennies were not produced for collectors in the manner of Conder tokens. As such, all known survivors are circulated to one degree or another, and most are heavily worn and/or impaired. The present example has superior eye appeal and, for one, is finer than the plate coin for the W-11190 variety in the 2009 book Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins by Q. David Bowers. Very rare as a type, as the 1999 edition to the Baker Washingtonia reference reports that only seven or eight specimens are known.
