- 1899 Morgan Silver Dollar. MS-66 DPL (NGC).
A popular low mintage issue at an extraordinary level of preservation. Silky smooth in texture and virtually pristine, this beautiful premium Gem exhibits the most delicate sandy-silver iridescence on each side. The quality of strike is just as impressive as the surface preservation, both sides razor sharp in detail with bold cameo contrast between satiny devices and mirrored fields. This is one of the finest examples of the issue that we have ever offered, a significant strike and condition rarity that belongs in an advanced Morgan dollar set.
With a limited circulation strike mintage of 330,000 pieces, the 1899 has long been regarded as one of the most desirable Morgan silver dollars. During the earliest decades of the 20th century the 1899 was rare in numismatic circles, with very few examples having been released into circulation. The situation began to change in the 1950s, however, when original bags of Mint State coins started to emerge from storage in federal vaults. By the early to mid 1960s enough examples had come to light that the 1899 is now readily obtainable in Uncirculated condition. Very few pieces display enough reflectivity in the fields to qualify for a Deep Mirror Prooflike designation from the major certification services, however, confirming the rarity of the present Gem. Exceptionally well preserved, to boot, this lovely example will please even the most discerning numismatist.
