- Very Rare FUCIO Concave Ends Fugio
1787 Fugio Copper. Club Rays. Newman 2-C, W-6630. Rarity-6. Concave Ends, FUCIO. VF-20 (PCGS).
161.1 grains. A finer than usual example of this variety, which remains the only collectible variety of the Concave Ends type despite its great rarity. Attractive medium brown with golden tan devices and deepening toning at the peripheries. Very even in appearance despite extremely fine granularity that is revealed under magnification. A bit of surface verdigris is present at FUCIO and a vertical striation descends from the base of the gnomon to the rim near 5 o'clock. The reverse shows two far more subtle vertical striations. The rims are perfect and the eye appeal is excellent for this distinctive and elusive variety. FUGIO is misspelled FUCIO, a connection to the Connecticuts struck in the same area which show Fugio-related misspellings like CONNFC and FNDE. Rob Retz's census lists this piece as fifteenth finest known, finer than his own collection coin. This compares quite favorably to the VF-25 example that brought $13,800 in our Stack's March 2007 sale, lot 98. With a good deal of new interest in Fugios since that time, this piece should surpass that realization.
