- A fabulous GEM Pattern Flying Eagle cent. Everything about it is high end and totally original. The obverse was struck using the regular issue Small Letters die, while the reverse is struck with a plain oak wreath. This popular transitional pattern was struck on a copper-nickel planchet with a plain edge. Considered to be Rarity-5, there are about 70 graded in all grades between PCGS and NGC, including, no doubt, much duplication. This GEM has the look! Deeply reflective and flashy fields beam with a golden-tan and iridescent brilliance. The surfaces are nearly pristine, indeed there are more lines and marks on the holder than there are on the coin. The devices are sharply struck up and have precision definition that rendered each detail to its finest, chiseled relief. The eye appeal is superb, and worthy of its lofty grade, CAC approval, and Eagle Eye Photo Seal. PCGS 10, NGC 3, CAC 4. This coin sold in the 2019 FUN auction for $5,040. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $6,500. At this grade level, this coin is of similar rarity to the regular issue Proof 1858 Small Letters Flying Eagle cent, and we sold the most recent of those for $27,025 in April 2021! In comparison, this rarity seems to be quite reasonable! WOW. Good luck. Cert. Number 5386292 PCGS # 11842
