1889 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-64+ (PCGS). Here is an impressively lustrous example of the final date in the denomination. The warm honey-rose surfaces are alive with boldly moving cartwheel activity and are laden with eye appeal. The strike is bold to sharp in all places including Liberty's tresses and the vertical line in the reverse bow. This series wound down in 1889 with a mintage of 2,300 circulation strikes. The entire mintage was delivered by the Mint's coiner in December of the year, just in time for holiday gift giving, the fate of numerous $3s in that era. Indeed, it is thought that not all of the 2,300 pieces were distributed. Absolutely choice for the grade and not far from another half step up the grading scale. PCGS# 8011. NGC ID: 25NC.
