- 1870-G Octagonal 25 Cents. BG-760. Rarity-7+. Liberty Head. MS-63 (PCGS). OGH. Reflective golden-olive surfaces also offer bold striking detail and solid Choice Mint State quality. A small, shallow planchet void (as made) at star 1 serves as a useful identifier, while both sides are free of significant post-production blemishes. This elusive issue from maker Robert B. Gray & Co. was discovered by David Doering circa 1980 to 1982. The Leonard census of 2003 accounts for just seven specimens, one of which may be a duplicate; PCGS CoinFactsnotes "5 to 7 known." The present example may by the #4 specimen in Bob Leonard's list, which is described as "One certified by PCGS as MS-63," but with no provenance information provided. In any event, it is an upper end example of the rare BG-760 issue that will have no difficulty finding its way into another specialized cabinet. Provenance: From the Oregon Collection.
