1854-S Liberty Head Eagle. AU-55 (NGC). A bright and lustrous Choice AU with attractive reddish-gold patina throughout. Striking detail is sharp to full over virtually all design elements, the quality and eye appeal of this piece superior for the assigned grade. The perennially popular 1854-S is the premier ten-dollar gold eagle issue from the San Francisco Mint. While a relatively high percentage of the 123,826-piece mintage has survived, examples that grade AU or Mint State are scarce relative to demand for them among today's quality conscious gold enthusiasts.
