- NETHERLANDS. Dutch Revolt. Siege of Breda. 40 Stuivers, 1625. PCGS AU-53.
KM-5; Korchnak-112; Vanhoudt-678; Delm-322A; van Gelder-229C; DeMay-3184; MO-4.17.5.3. Weight: 9.87 gms. 27.2 mm x 27.2 mm. Siege: 28 August 1624 - 5 July 1625. Square uniface flan with crowned arms of Maurice of Nassau within beaded border; Legend: BREDA.OBSESSA.1625; four stamps around, 40 above, five-petal rosette below, arms or Breda at sides. The central stamps bold and fairly even and the outer stamps are all deeply impressed on a nicely produced planchet. The surfaces are smooth with a slight glossiness and iridescence on the obverse, while the reverse is slightly flat sheen. A rather pleasing and wholly original looking example of the type that offers good eye appeal.
The heavily fortified city of Breda with its 7,500 defenders was besieged in late August by a Spanish force of nearly 25,000. The Spanish surrounded and set up fortifications in key positions around the city against counterattacks from its inhabitants. As provisions started to dwindle, Maurice of Nassau became ill and sought medical attention in Haag. While there he was able to muster some support and was able to secure funds for 5,000 additional troops. However, by the time he returned to Breda, the Spanish had received reinforcements more than doubling in size. Ultimately, it was decided to surrender to the superior force with the remaining 3,000 soldiers being able to exit safe and honorably.
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
