- A warm, medium chocolate brown toned S-123, an R-4 variety that was one of the three varieties that turned up in the famed Nichols Hoard. Identifiable by the 6 berries on both sides of the wreath, the high position of the final 0 in the denominator, the high placement of the date, and the cut on Liberty's cheek which Breen opined was a piece of another die that fell out and damaged the die. Boldly lustrous with wonderful surfaces, this coin is a delight for any type or early copper collector. Well struck and devoid of any serious marks, there are just a few little imperfections in the planchet, which were mint made. The eye appeal is excellent. Hints of mahogany red-brown really pops when rotated in the light. We love CHOICE early large cents, and the present example is high end and borders on the GEM grade. PCGS 38, NGC 5, CAC 16. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $20,000 and the CAC CPG value is $19,400. The three most recent PCGS/CAC examples sold in the $14,400 to $17,625. Very scarce any finer, just 14 are graded higher in the BN category, this one is at a great value range for most advanced collectors. We anticipate strong bidding for this beautifully preserved near-GEM. Cert. Number 34153495 PCGS # 1422.00
