- 1870 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-940, Pollock-1053. Rarity-6+. Proof-66 (PCGS). 1870 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-935, Pollock-1041. Rarity-6+. Proof-64 RD (PCGS). Standard Silver design with a right facing bust of Liberty on the obverse. Liberty is wearing a soft cap ornamented with two stars, and a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY crosses her shoulder. There is no initial B within the folds of the ribbon at the back of the portrait. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed on a scroll below. There are two obverse die varieties of Judd-940, and on Pollock-1053 examples, as here, the point of Liberty's bust is distant from the scroll. On the reverse, the denomination 50 CENTS and the date 1870 are surrounded by a wreath of corn and cotton with the word STANDARD above. Struck in silver with a plain edge.<br /> A wonderfully original specimen, both sides exhibit vivid cobalt-blue, pale-pink and olive-russet peripheral toning. The central reverse is largely brilliant, while the balance of the obverse is awash in warm silver-lavender patina. Fully struck and expectably smooth at the premium Gem grade level.
