THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION An exceptional CHOICE example of this early No Motto Seated Liberty half dollar which is TIED FOR FINEST graded at PCGS. This marvelous coin is an old friend, one we sold five years ago in our May 2016 New Orleans Regency Auction XVII, where it was described as: "A frosty, nearly gem quality example with light golden-russet toning. Only the most minute scuffs can be seen with effort. MS64 is the highest grade assigned at PCGS. Well struck and quite attractive. Much scarcer in high grade than the mintage of 1,766,000 might suggest." PCGS 14, NGC 5, CAC 4. A non-CAC PCGS coin sold for $6,300 in February 2020 and this coin sold for $5,640 what seems like ages ago! Clearly the price guides are all wrong on this date/grade.
