- GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, ND (1601-02). Elizabeth I. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield.
S-2582; Dav-3757; KM-7; N-2012. Mintmark "1". Displaying a premium, impressively even strike with attractive golden olive tone over the surfaces. As is typical of the issue, a number of minor planchet imperfections reside in the centers, but they mostly steer clear of Elizabeth's portrait.
While Crowns of Elizabeth are among the most desired of all, it is the incredible provenance that truly sets this coin apart. Once owned by Dr. John Sharp (1644-1714), Archbishop of York, who pioneered the collecting of British coins at a time when Ancient Greek and Roman coins dominated in popularity. His passion for them ultimately led him to pen his "Observations on the Coinage of England", which would circulate in manuscript form among collectors for about a century until it was finally printed in 1785. After his passing, the collection was passed through the generations until the 1960s, at which point it was dispersed through a number of auctions as well as privately through A.H. Baldwin & Sons and Owen Parsons of Gloucester. A rare opportunity for the collector that not only loves great coins, but also has a deep respect for the numismatic predecessors that paved the way for the hobby we enjoy so much today.
Estimate: $4,000 - $5,000.
Provenance: Ex: Archbishop Sharp.
