- 1853 Round 50 Cents. BG-428. Rarity-3. Liberty Head. MS-63 (PCGS).
Bright golden-olive surfaces with a satin to modestly semi-reflective finish. While certainly not a rarity in an absolute sense, BG-428 is apt to be found lightly circulated as it is one of the varieties in the California small denomination gold series that saw active commercial use during the Gold Rush. Indeed, even the primary Jay Roe specimen was certified AU-58 by PCGS in our (Bowers and Merena's) September 2003 sale of that important collection. (There were two other BG-428s in that sale, a former jewelry piece and a holed love token, further confirming the pedestrian nature of this variety during the middle of the 19th century.) Clearly this is an above average example worthy of serious consideration.
Provenance: From the Oregon Collection.
PCGS Population: 31; 8 finer (MS-65 finest).
PCGS# 10464. NGC ID: 2BKK.
