- 1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 1.2-C, W-2720. URS-10. Muttonhead. AU-55 (PCGS). Deep chocolate brown with golden high points. Absolutely choice with pristine surfaces for the issue; it's a challenge to find a mark of any size, even under low magnification. Indeed, don't fret yourself, the present writer can't find a stray mark either. We do note some minor central ticks, in the planchet when struck but not erased by the flow of metal into the die high points; this is not damage but more an insight into the manufacture of the variety. Early die state, peripheral legends essentially complete; the die was later reground, softening the periphery to just a jumble of partial letters. The central designs are sharp, indeed, about as sharp as ever seen for the variety. Full central reverse elements are present. The present writer has seen scores and more of Muttonhead coppers in his career, but few were as memorable as the present coin. This is what quality is all about in the Connecticut copper series--eye appeal, flawless surfaces, and a crisp strike, all fairly scarce in a Muttonhead as many collectors of the series understand. A great opportunity to own a Connecticut copper with great overall appeal and pedigreed to the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection. Don't hesitate here!
