1884 Pattern Annular, or Ring-Form Cent. Judd-1721, Pollock-1929. Rarity-5. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-64 (PCGS). Obv: this is Eastman Johnson's "holey" design with the perforation at the center of the planchet, at the top is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and below is the date 1884. Notice the engraver blundered the O in OF, as it has a serif on the upper right, likely from a mispunched S as that is the only letter that has a similar serif in that location. Rev: ONE CENT above, flanked by two olive branches with no fruit, small shield below which is placed inverted, likely another blunder. These dies appear to show some degree of haste in their execution. Scarce in all grades, this example is reasonably spot-free and handsome, and identifiable by a minor planchet flake on the C of CENT.
