- 1856 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-181, Pollock-213. Rarity-6+. Proof-63 RB (PCGS). 73.46 grains. Copper. Plain edge. From the same dies used to coin the copper-nickel version of the date. Fiery deep orange blends with chocolate brown on the lustrous surfaces. The strike is weak at the peripheries, affecting the lettering, tail feathers, and beak on the obverse, and much of the wreath details on the reverse. Still, the coin holds up well to careful examination and reveals no marks worthy of individual disclosure. A certificate from a metallurgic laboratory in California attest to the 100% copper composition of the present specimen, and is available upon request by the next owner of this rare prize; the certificate will not be available at lot viewing. A neat opportunity for a collector who wants to add a little spice to his or her Flying Eagle cent collection.
