- GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Crown, 1823. London Mint. George IV. PCGS AU-53.
S-3808; KM-688. Second reverse. With a deep tone that lightens as the eye reaches the portrait, this silver example has pockets of luster that remain to sheen light. Very minimal wear that has not defaced any of the intricate design elements.
Opulent and extravagant, George IV was never popular and his time on the throne is perhaps the lowest ebb of the Monarchy’s popularity during the post-Civil War era. George IV threw a coronation in 1821 that cost the British public over £200,000 in contrast to that of his father which only cost £10,000. He reigned as he was crowned, with an open pocketbook, sparing no expense for his expanding collection of artworks and his pricey renovation of Windsor Castle. Morbidly obese, and nearly blind from cataracts, George IV shut himself in and rarely appeared in public. By his death, George was widely reviled, and no protracted period of mourning followed his demise.
Estimate: $200 - $300.
Provenance: From the Runze Collection.
