- 1722 Pattern Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny. Martin 1.1-A.1, W-12650. Rarity-7+. D: G: REX, Rocks at Right. AU-58 (PCGS). 61.73 grains. Lustrous light brown with glossy fields and some mint color surviving around legends and devices on both sides. A particularly high grade specimen of this rare design type, long called a pattern though, as noted by the cataloger of the Roper Collection, "although listed as patterns, all the specimens examined by this cataloger have shown signs of wear, as does this piece." The only example ever offered publicly that can be called unworn is the gem Ford coin, which brought $43,125 in 2005. This piece shows some natural pits at central obverse on George's cheek, below bust truncation, and at the left end of the reverse exergue. Some old encrustation is present in the deeper interstices of the design on both sides. A fine planchet crack descends through the tip of George's bust, above Hibernia's head on the reverse. The overall visual appeal is very good. As noted in the Ford sale, just about a dozen examples of this rare type exist, nearly all in the VF-EF range, though a few are heavily worn, even corroded. The only obviously finer example is Ford's; this piece appears to be sharper than all others investigated, none of which can claim any remaining mint color. This high quality rarity would grace any cabinet.
