- 1866 Liberty Seated Half Dime. MS-67 (NGC).
Despite the end of the Civil War, in the previous year silver continued to be hoarded in the Eastern United States through 1866. As a result, circulation strike mintages remained limited at the Philadelphia Mint. The total number of 1866 half dimes produced amounted to just 10,000 pieces. Survivors are elusive in all grades, most examples never reached commercial channels but, rather were hoarded and later melted.
How fortunate we are to present the present example -- one of the finest and most visually appealing circulation strike 1866 Liberty Seated half dimes known to exist. Both sides possess full, vibrant bloom in a blend of satin and softly frosted textures. The centers are more or less brilliant, while around the peripheries we note mottled toning in beautiful reddish-gold and cobalt blue iridescence, somewhat deeper in tone over the obverse. Fully struck and virtually pristine, this coin would serve as a centerpiece of the finest Seated half dime set. Coin for coin, high quality circulation strike 1866 half dimes such as this are much rarer than their Proof counterparts. Combined PCGS and NGC Population: only 7; with just 3 MS-67+ finer at PCGS.
NGC Census: 3; none are finer.
PCGS# 4388. NGC ID: 234J.
