- 1841-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar. WB-3. Rarity-3. Medium O. MS-62 (PCGS).
Most of the focal features are sharply struck on both sides of this satiny, predominantly antique silver example. Glints of steel gray patina are also scattered about, mostly on the reverse. Nearly smooth enough to warrant consideration at the Choice Uncirculated grade level, an impressive provenance adds further appeal for this conditionally rare early New Orleans Mint half dollar.
This coin was part of a group of 20 (some sources say as many as 40) Mint State 1841-O half dollars discovered on the site of the old Fort Harrison, Florida in 1947. It appears that all of these coins were struck from the die marriage that we now know as WB-3.
PCGS# 6237. NGC ID: 24GS.
PCGS Population: 13; 17 finer (MS-66 finest).
Provenance: From the Alexander Collection. Earlier from a roll of 20 Mint State 1841-O half dollars found on the site of the old Fort Harrison, Florida in 1947; acquired by our consignor on August 9 of that year. Stack's company envelope with provenance notes included.
