- PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. PCGS EF-45, Countermark: AU Details.
KM-Unlisted; Basso-56; PNM#6-136; PNM#16-304; PNM#21-119; Cacho-Unlisted; Gil-5-4-3-III. Type VI countermark; crowned Y.II. within circular indent. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837 (By Decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark applied to the obverse of a 1832-Do RM/L Mexico Republic 8 Reales, clean date. A handsome example from this popular mint, one of the more available dates we have in excess of 10 examples recorded. The countermark is nicely centered, though unevenly applied with much of the crowns design features muddled. The surfaces are relatively smooth with minor earthen deposits amongst the devices adding to its originality. Close inspection reveals an small unobtrusive chopmark, "合", just before the star at 9 o'clock on the obverse mentioned for the sake of accuracy, but is hardly a distraction. This handsome survivor displays rich mottled patina with hints of iridescent hues that pop out when rotating in the light.
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
