- THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST QUARTERS
A Condition Census B-3, ranking squarely in the middle of both the Tompkins and Rea, et al Condition Census listings, this VERY CHOICE is on the cusp of a FULL GEM classification. This die pairing is known as the "blundered" reverse, which features bold repunching of 25, as well as an errant additional period. Struck from die state a on the obverse, b on the reverse, with a thin crack from the rim through star 11; a reverse crack from the rim to the 5 to the arrow feathers.
Sharply impressed from the dies, both sides display a full, crisp definition throughout. All the feathers are fully detailed, the star radial lines boldly struck up. A full, vivid frosty satin brilliance glows boldly on both sides, accenting the delicate golden-russet toning that adorns the peripheral devices. The fields are generally a pearly-off white/antique silver. There is a splash of color under the eagle's left wing. There are some tiny ticks and a stray line, visible only with the aid of a strong glass. The eye appeal is excellent!
Ex Good Harbour Bay Collection, Heritage, April 2010, lot 1139, as PCGS MS63; Heritage, October 2010, lot 3569, as PCGS MS63+; Heritage, April 2013, lot 4204.
PCGS 5, NGC 6, CAC 4. This is the SOLE PCGS MS64 to ever sell in auction, bringing $15,275 in its most recent auction appearance. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $20,000 and the CAC CPG value is $21,600. There are just five graded higher, the only one to sell in auction was the Clapp-Eliasberg-Pogue MS65 that realized $88,125 in May 2015. This marvelous coin is truly worthy of a strong bid and placement in a great set of early quarters or type coins.
