- The post-Civil War economy was recovering from five years of upheaval and the Philadelphia mint produced a mere 3,080 quarter eagles in 1866. Of those, only 60-75 are estimated to survive today in all grades. When David Akers wrote his seminal work on the U.S. Gold series, he noted that the average grade encountered in his survey of auctions was "VF-28" and said, "Most business strikes are very low grade, and the 1866 is tied for having the twelfth lowest average grade of any quarter eagle...I have not seen a strictly uncirculated 1866 and only one piece that even graded a full AU." This is a very impressive borderline Mint State piece. The wear is limited to the slightest hint of friction on the surfaces. Generally well struck design elements show only light bluntness in the central obverse details. A rich orange-gold tone is accented by glowing underlying luster the flashes around the protected areas of the design. A strong glass reveals a dusting of ancient iridescence on the fields. A few old bag marks from its time in transport and very brief time in circulation during the onset of Reconstruction. The eye appeal is unaffected and is very pleasing for this rare and underrated date. PCGS 5, NGC 8. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $12,500. VERY RARE in any Mint State grade! This is one of those dates that comes up so infrequently the market does not value it as it should be. A great opportunity is presented here for the advanced quarter eagle specialist! Who knows when the next one will pop up. Cert. Number 18734179 PCGS # 7803
