- 1852 Seated Liberty Half Dollar. WB-101. MS-64 (PCGS). Penultimate-year-of-issue for the old-tenor silver coinage of 1794-1852, the Mint Act of February 21, 1853 would make most U.S. silver denominations subsidiary for the first time in our nation's history. Such a dramatic change was brought about by the California Gold Rush, the vast quantities of gold that it deposited into the world market making the price of silver rise in comparison to gold. Almost overnight U.S. silver coins became worth more as bullion that as coinage of the realm, and many examples were exported and/or melted. Additionally, little silver reached the Philadelphia Mint for coinage from 1850 through 1852, the limited yearly mintages that resulted further compounding the rarity of many issues from that era.<br /> Produced to the extent of just 77,130 pieces and subjected to widespread exportation and melting, the 1852 is a highly elusive Seated Half Dollar in all grades. Worn survivors are seldom seen, indicating that this issue probably did not circulate to any great extent. Mint State examples are also rare, and the few that have survived probably did so as part of contemporary numismatic cabinets. Indeed, this gorgeous near-Gem has that "old-time collection look," the centers brilliant but the peripheries ringed in vivid reddish-orange and cobalt-blue toning. Bathed in vibrant mint frost, the surfaces are jut a few stray abrasions away from full Gem status. Beautiful!
