- 1852-C Gold Dollar. MS-64 (NGC). This memorable quality 1852-C gold dollar is bright yellow-gold with bold olive highlights. It is deeply lustrous with some patches of prooflike reflectivity, especially on the obverse. Sharply struck for the date with full details throughout. On a typical Charlotte Mint planchet of the era, with low magnification revealing natural planchet roughness, as struck and practically a given for the date. Other than that, the surfaces are essentially free of marks of any measure, even under low magnification. Boldly repunched base of 1 in date. It is one of just 9,434 pieces struck, the second lowest Charlotte Mint production of the design type. The typical survivor is apt to be VF or EF, with an occasional foray into AU territory. Mint State pieces are in the minority of surviving specimens. The present piece is deserving of the Choice Mint State accolades from NGC, and its given grade is equal to Bass:61 (Bowers and Merena, October 1999). Pleasing to the eye, and among the dozen finest grading events for the date at NGC. An attractive Charlotte Mint gold dollar, and a coin that would add a touch of flair to a U.S. gold type set.
