- 1925 Norse-American Centennial Medal. Swoger-24Ba-wv1. Silver. Thin Planchet. MS-66 (NGC). Brilliant in the centers with blended blue and golden-brown iridescence at the borders. James Earle Fraser of Buffalo nickel fame created the designs. Far rarer than its Thick Planchet counterpart, the distribution for the Silver Thin Planchet Norse-American medal is just 6,000 pieces.<br /> Although clearly a medal rather than a coin, these Norse-American pieces have been collected as part of the commemorative half dollar series for generations. The reason for this special status is not known with certainty, but it is probably at least partially due to the fact that openings for Nose-American Centennial medals were included in the popular commemorative half dollar "coin boards" distributed by Wayte Raymond. This cataloger (Andy Pollock) conjectures that Mr. Raymond had a large stash of Norse-American medals that he could supply to numismatists as they proceeded to assemble their commemorative half dollar sets.
