- 1795 Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent. W-8730. / York Cathedral Mule. FEAR GOD AND HONOUR THE KING Edge. MS-65 BN (PCGS). Obv: Regular-issue TAL obverse. Rev: a central cathedral, YORK. 1795 below, repunched 5 in date. Edge: FEAR GOD AND HONOUR THE KING (Biblical verse from 1 Peter 2:17). Among the rarest of all the numerous Talbot, Allum & Lee mules in the Conder token series, this of Yorkshire, D&H-65; also Atkins-60; Breen-1052. Deep rose-brown surfaces are glossy and hard, and somewhat prooflike in places in the fields. The strike is fairly bold throughout, and no marks of any magnitude are present to hinder the visual enjoyment. Engraved by Thomas Wyon and struck at Kempson's in Birmingham, England, the Talbot, Allum & Lee cents of 1794-1795 were readily accepted in pocket change in the New York City area, as they were somewhat higher in weight than the circulating counterfeit halfpennies and other thin, worn-out coppers then in circulation. Never one to let a good thing pass, Kempson's manufactory struck and sold numerous mules of the issue for British collectors caught up in the latter days of the Conder token craze. The present Gem is one of just two examples of this rarity certified by PCGS. Absolutely choice for the grade, and far more rare than the John Howard mules, for example. A grand opportunity for those who specialize in unusual "colonial" issues.
