- The mintage of 1837 half eagles was limited to 207,121, and the mint utilized three different pairs of dies to produce that number of coins. Today, the 1837 is a very scarce date, with PCGS CoinFacts estimating 350 in all grades and Haynor-McCloskey estimating 450. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth described the date in their Gold Encyclopedia, "Despite a seemingly high mintage, this is actually a semi-scarce date, with a raw rarity on par with that of the 1838-D. Examples up to About Uncirculated are relatively easy to find, but Mint State examples are decidedly rare." This MS64 is tied for Condition Census #6 for the entire date. The HM-2 variety offered here represents an estimated 200 of the 450 Haynor estimated surviving, making up about 46% of the total. The HM-2 variety combined obverse 2 and reverse L. It is the only obverse of the date with both a single forelock curl and block 8 in the date. The reverse is identified by the broken middle arrow shaft in the eagle's talon, the only reverse of the issue with this diagnostic. 3 VERY CHOICE QUALITY! WOW! This is a vibrantly frosted and highly lustrous borderline GEM graded Classic Head half eagle. Greenish-gold accents pop in the light as you rotate the surfaces in a light. Crisp, complete striking definition is seen on both obverse and reverse with all details wonderfully rendered. The surfaces show only a few light, totally insignificant breaks in the frost and a minor scratch on the reverse noted only for the sake of full disclosure. The eye appeal is very high end for sure! Ex Heritage's 2007 FUN Auction, January 2007, lot 3544; Heritage's 2018 FUN Auction, January 2018, lot 5033; Heritage's 2018 CSNS Auction, April 2018, lot 4350; Crescent City Numismatics; our consignor. PCGS 8, NGC 5, CAC 6. The last PCGS/CAC example sold in July 2009 for just shy of $30,000 and more recently the Haynor MS64+ CAC example sold for $66,000 in August 2022. The current CAC CPG value is $40,300 and the PCGS Price Guide value is $45,000. This is an amazing coin worthy of a fantastic type or date set of this short, challenging, emerging series. Good luck.
