1838-D Classic Half Eagle. AU-53 (NGC). Rare in all grades with a small mintage of 20,583 pieces from this first year of issue of the denomination from the new Dahlonega Mint. Lustrous in the protected areas and well struck throughout with the bold mintmark located above the date. Average surfaces that show minor nicks from handling and commerce. Pleasing overall quality and a prize for the date specialist. A single pair of dies were used to coin these, brought directly the Dahlonega Mint by coiner David H. Mason from Philadelphia.
