- As the Civil War was breaking out in the east, the San Francisco mint was producing coins on a limited basis for west coast commerce. Only 15,500 eagles were struck for circulation, and that is where virtually every example struck went, with PCGS CoinFacts estimating a total of 80 surviving in all grades. The ONLY coin that survives in Uncirculated grade is an NGC MS61. This is a wholesome, lightly worn, original, essentially CHOICE AU example of this RARE date. A glass will be useful in locating some minor contact, which is appropriate for the amount of circulation on this coin. The devices show strong detail with just light friction on the high points. The warm gold patina in the protected areas and lighter honey wheat color in the centers is very attractive. PCGS 11, NGC 15, CAC 3. The most recent PCGS-graded coin to sell was NOT CAC approved and sold for $15,275 back in the 2017 ANA auction. The only CAC-approved example to sell was an NGC coin back in 2012. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $18,500 and we could see this coin selling for more. Fewer than 20, including no doubt duplicate submissions, have ever graded finer at PCGS, the finest an AU58+. Do not let this important Civil War date rarity slip away! Cert.
