- The Magnificent Parmelee 1722-H Nine Deniers
Probably Finest Known
1722-H French Colonies Sou, or 9 Deniers. La Rochelle Mint. W-11840. AU-53 (PCGS).
90.1 grains. An absolutely incredible example, probably the finest known specimen of the entire date. Hillyer Ryder graded this coin "Uncirculated" and it was described in the 1890 Parmelee sale as "uncirc., olive color: rare; so perfect." Both obverse and reverse are frosty and lustrous, light olive brown with golden tones. Some mahogany tones surround legends and devices, and a single spot is present between NI of COLONIES. The obverse is aligned to 10 o'clock, with denticles from 2 o'clock to 7 o'clock; C and F both touch the rim. A thin vertical planchet striation is present below the final date digit, equally thin horizontal striation left of mintmark. The reverse is boldly struck, with plentiful die finish lines at center, and ideally centered, with complete legends. A short arc die crack is present within the letters of MINI on the reverse, dense network of cracks within E of COLONIES. This piece was last sold at auction in 1890, having traded privately after that as part of the Ryder Collection, purchased by F.C.C. Boyd, then to Ford and New Netherlands with the Boyd group. It is accompanied by the Ryder ticket and a New Netherlands envelope, in addition to the Craige envelope. A true prize, one of the highlights of our sale.
Provenance: From the Hillyer Ryder Collection, thus also from the F.C.C. Boyd Collection. Earlier, from New York Stamp and Coin Company’s sale of the Parmelee Collection, June 1890, lot 289.
