- 1852 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. WB-3. Rarity-4. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC. Lightly toned overall in golden-gray and champagne-pink, the left obverse border is further enhanced by mottled olive-russet. Just 77,130 circulation strike half dollars were produced in the Philadelphia Mint in 1852, the vast majority of which were hoarded and melted by speculators during an era when the precious metal value of old tenor U.S. Mint silver coins exceeded face value. Most survivors are either Mint State or minimally circulated, indicative of the fact that this issue did not see active commercial use. Even such survivors are scarce to rare in an absolute sense, however, and with the premium quality offered here they are decidedly in the latter category. Provenance: From the BASH Collection.
