Near Gem 1829 Newcomb-8 Ex Howard R. Newcomb - Floyd T. Starr 1829 Matron Head Cent. N-8. Rarity-1. Large Letters. MS-64 BN (PCGS). A superior Choice example painted in varying shades of olive gold, steel blue, and peach. These colors are complemented by radiant Mint luster that blankets each side and glows impressively under a light source. Smooth and fully without distractions, the technical quality approaches Gem in many respects. The thinnest pinscratch is noted from the top of star 2 into the field, but this is virtually invisible without magnification. Trivially aligned towards 5 o'clock on the obverse while the reverse is ideally centered. The dies are just lightly fatigued, showing faint flowlines equivalent to Noyes Die State B/B. An attractive and well struck piece that will surely draw much attention from specialists. This significant representative of the Newcomb-8 dies is accompanied by an illustrious provenance that extends back to World War II. It is the example owned by Howard R. Newcomb himself and was offered along with his collection in the February 1945 sale by J.C. Morgenthau and Co. It was acquired from that sale by noted cent specialist Floyd T. Starr, in whose collection it would reside for the following four decades until our sale of his cabinet in June 1984. Offered in lot 228 of the Starr sale, we called it "exceptionally lovely, tied for second finest known." More recently, Bill Noyes has assigned it an EAC grade of MS-60+, placing it among the lower ranks of the Condition Census for the variety. Provenance: From the Paradise Collection.
