- Very Rare NO COMPROMISE Token Variant
Circa 1863 Military Bust / NO COMPROMISE WITH TRAITORS Civil War token. Musante GW-652, Baker-Unlisted, Fuld-114/432a. Rarity-9. Copper. MS-64 BN (PCGS).
19.9 mm. Faded tan and olive brown on the obverse with traces of rosy original red outlining the portrait and within the recesses. The prooflike field is gently accented by mottled sky blue. The reverse retains warm orange red in the fields and has mellowed to light olive brown otherwise. A small strike-through is noted at the center of the reverse.
Though not given a separate listing by Baker, this piece is noted under his entry for B-492, “…also struck with an obverse bearing a military bust, same as No. 194.” Baker-194 is the larger-diameter Headquarters series by George H. Lovett. Close study of this die suggests that it was indeed made using the identical portrait punch that was used in making the obverse dies for the Headquarters series.
Listed in Musante as very rare with only a composite illustration, as this one was not noticed in the Baker holdings. It is listed only in copper, though Q. David Bowers owned a silver impression, which is the only other one that we know has appeared for sale in recent years. Interestingly, it shared the reverse strike-through seen on this piece. A great rarity in the series. Steve Hayden noted in his description of the Bowers piece that this obverse die is not known in any other usage, and according to A Guide Book of Civil War Tokensby Q. David Bowers, it is estimated that just eight examples are known.
Provenance: Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
