- 1841-D Liberty Quarter Eagle. Winter 2-D. MS-63 (NGC). This is an extremely rare die marriage of the issue, and we believe that fewer than five different examples are known. The obverse die is the only one that numismatists have discerned for the issue, leaving it up to the reverse to determine the exact variety. On this Winter 2-D example, the shaft of the arrow ends over the left edge of the upright of the D mintmark. The fraction bar extends to the left side of the opening of the mintmark, and the digit 1 in the denomination 1/2 is entirely left of the D. Despite Doug Winter's comment in the 2003 edition of the book Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861 that, ""No die breaks are seen on this use of Reverse D,"" we do see a pair of spindly cracks (as struck) over the lower portion of the reverse.
A leading rarity in the Dahlonega Mint Quarter Eagle series, the 1841-D boasts a paltry mintage of 4,164 pieces. In AU and Mint State, this issue is the fifth rarest of 20 issues in the Dahlonega Mint Two-and-a-Half series. The present example ranks as Condition Census #2, and it is an obviously important coin for the advanced specialist. Deep olive-khaki undertones backlight warmer medium-orange patina. Although the strike is a bit soft in and around the centers, the overall appearance is sufficiently bold for a product of this Southern branch mint. A pair of wispy reverse abrasions over the eagle's neck and in the field before the beak are the most useful pedigree markers.
