- 1827 Capped Bust Dime. JR-9. Rarity-4. Pointed Top 1 in 10 C. MS-63 (PCGS).
A highly significant offering for the early dime variety enthusiast, this is a handsome Choice Mint State coin with a base of pearl gray patina to both sides. The lower half of the obverse is splashed with olive-russet, the central reverse dressed in copper-rose. The strike is bold to sharp throughout, the surfaces with a soft satin texture that reveals modest semi-reflective tendencies in the fields at direct lighting angles. A scarce and conditionally die marriage of the 1827 Capped Bust dime, JR-9 has an extant population of only 10 or so coins in EF and higher grades, per the Zack-Scuderi-Sherrill early dime reference of 2015. The authors cite a high end AU as the finest known, clearly unaware of the existence of the E. Horatio Morgan specimen offered here. (As of this writing, the PCGS Population Reportalso reports two grading events for this variety in MS-62.) Recognized as likely the finest known 1827 JR-9 dime when cataloged by Superior in 1988, this coin retains that distinction in today's market and is sure to sell for a strong bid.
Provenance: From the E. Horatio Morgan Collection. Earlier from Superior's A. Bernard Shore Collection Sale, January-February 1988, lot 983.
PCGS# 4504. NGC ID: 2375.
