- 1859 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. OC-3. Rarity-3+. MS-61 (NGC). This pretty example exhibit undertones of vivid antique gold, cobalt blue, champagne-apricot and pale pink to dominant olive-gray and mauve patina. Well struck, most design elements exhibit sharp to full detail. Lustrous with a satiny texture, the surfaces are far smoother in hand than one might expect at the assigned grade level. The 1859 is a scarce No Motto Liberty Seated dollar in an absolute sense, despite a generous mintage of 255,700 circulation strikes. Export claimed much of the mintage and was the reason these coins were produced in the first place. Mint State examples are rare, and represent the few survivors that escaped commercial use.
