- THE TERRA PISTACIA COLLECTION Another GORGEOUS GEM 1873 Pattern Trade Dollar. Among the many different types struck, this one features Barber's Liberty sitting on a globe with a plow behind, a bale of hay and wheat. Reverse: standing eagle holding shield in his talon, arrows in other. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, this is a Rarity-4 pattern, with perhaps 76-200 minted. These silver trade dollar patterns were sold in six piece sets, likely distributed by contemporary coin dealers in Philadelphia who had connections inside the mint. Intensely reflective, watery fields are aglow under the iridescent gold, lilac, tan, and olive patina. The toning is rich and evenly distributed on the glorious GEM surfaces. Clearly this coin sat for a long time unmolested where it could acquire this lovely, original tone. There is only the slightest hint of weakness in the most central portions of the reverse, typical of the type. The devices are thickly frosted and would possibly be awarded the Cameo designation today. The eye appeal is AMAZING. Ex Richard B. Winsor Collection, Chapman Brothers, December 1895, lot 1135 (part of a six-piece set, see following lots); J.M. Clapp Collection; Clapp Estate to Eliasberg, via Stack's in 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg Collection, Bowers & Merena, May 1996, lot 304. PCGS 2, NGC 4, CAC 3. None of thee PCGS coins have sold in auction. This GEM is clearly finer than the Simpson coin (PCGS PR65 CAM) and better struck than the Newman NGC PR66 CAC. The PCGS Price Guide value is $12,000 and it would not be a surprise if this marvelous GEM brought that or more! Likely held together since time of issue, it is our hope this and the other trade dollar pattern lots stay together. Good luck. Cert. Number 4491584 PCGS # 61578
