- 1870 Pattern Dollar. Judd-1003, Pollock-1135. Rarity-7-. Silver. Plain Edge. Proof-64+ Cameo (PCGS).
Obv:William Barber's Liberty Seated design with 13 stars around the border and the date 1870 below. Liberty's right hand rests atop a shield over which a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY is draped, while her left hand holds a small laurel branch. A free-standing liberty pole is behind the portrait. Rev:The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue Liberty Seated silver dollars of the Motto design type. Lightly toned in iridescent champagne-pink, this gorgeous near-Gem is fully struck with bold field-to-device contrast. Examples of this type were distributed to contemporary collectors as part of pattern Proof sets. Plain edge silver strikings, as here, are rarer than their reeded edge counterparts, the uspatterns.comwebsite reporting that only a dozen specimens are known.
PCGS Population: 1; 1 finer in this category (Proof-66 Cameo).
PCGS# 416749.
