- One of the FINEST KNOWN 57-S quarter eagles, and to think that it exists only because the lustrous surfaces were preserved by the icy depths of the Atlantic Ocean! Boldly satiny surfaces radiate with vibrant, rolling bands of cartwheel luster on both sides. A few of the tiniest ticks and lines can be seen under a strong glass but the eye appeal is SUPERB. Sharply struck devices have a superb look. It is hard to imagine, but unlike the crates and bags of double eagles and ingots that are famous from the wreck, this coin was likely in the pocket of a stevedore or some other passenger or crew member. Prior to the second round of S.S. Central America recovered coins, the finest graded was MS62; the finest known examples were preserved in the icy depths, with just 2 that graded MS63, and three finer.
