- 1829 Capped Bust Half Dime. LM-2, V-3. Rarity-7 (as a Proof). Proof-64 (PCGS). CAC. The 1829 is the first issue in the Capped Bust Half Dime series of 1829-1837 and, while business strikes are obtainable enough in most grades, proof strikings are very rare. The number of proofs struck is not known, although numismatists have identified several die marriages among survivors. Valentine-3, as represented by the present example, has an extant population of only 6-8 specimens (per Walter Breen, Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins: 1722-1989).
An unmistakable proof striking, both sides of this piece are fully defined -- even at the denticles -- and possess glittering reflectivity in the fields. The devices are set apart with more of a satin texture that, at certain angles at least, provides a cameo-like appearance to the finish. There are no detracting blemishes, and toning is confined to a bit of light olive-russet iridescence here and there at the borders. First year of issue for the type, and a rare coin in this format, the importance of this piece for advanced type purposes cannot be overstated.
This coin might be the specimen that we sold as lot 908 in our May 1996 sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, but we have been unable to positively confirm this pedigree through plate matching. Among other similarities between these two pieces (if indeed they are actually different coins) the Eliasberg specimen is also an example of the V-3 die marriage and was described as a Proof-64 in our Eliasberg Sale catalog.
